XHTML or HTML .?
I have now about 5 websites online (if you really want the links refer to the Links Section of this site). When I first started this XHTML 1.0 Strict thing as opposed to the HTML output of Microsoft FrontPage's WYSIWYG I was probably as keen as you can get to conform (I tried Dreamweaver once, hated it..! Sorry). Since then I have tried verifying my code through several code validators - some it passes & some it doesn't. What can I say..? Do you need to conform to someone's standards..? I suppose so, as far as I can determine WC3 seem to be top dog, not the only authority by any means but as far as can be determined leader of the pack. After the shambles that was HTML 3.0 where anyone who wanted to seemed to be adding their own code to the WWW some sort of authority was definitely in need. However, the bottom line from what I can determine is that while the egg-heads at W3C would like us to believe that HTML will be phased out, the reality is that it probably never will be. There will always be some sites written in it, apart from a '/>' at the end of each line there really isn't that much difference between XHTML 1.0 Strict & HTML 4.01. So what is all the fuss about..? If you ever figure it out let me know.
As for me, well I've spent that much time configuring my sites to conform to W3C standards (hence the link at the foot of the page) that I will carry on the way I'm going and hope I'm not betting the wrong horse.
But for what its worth, I've yet to see a browser that won't render a page as I intend it to be seen if I conform to W3C standards for XHTML 1.0 strict & CSS 2.1. Version 2.0 of XHTML has been a long time in the coming, but we shall see what it has to offer. The important thing from my end of the stick is that what I put on a page I intend you to see as I designed it, not as a Browser renders it.
